save the dates!

i finally got our save the dates out, hooray! i designed these with several things in mind; i wanted to provide a quick visual representation to our guests of what, when, and where (note: i removed the location in the callout box for privacy). i initially wanted to keep them all black and white, and printed them that way, so when i decided later that i wanted color in the hearts, you can imagine how that was accomplished...by hand, with water color. it honestly didn't take that long, i swear, and i'm really happy with how they came out. the little clothes pins are magnets i made to send with the dates, and i might be a little obsessed with them - our refrigerator is covered in the leftovers and i love getting mail that gives me an opportunity to use them.

Terrarium Tuesday

I might be slightly obsessed with succulents and terrariums and I can't help but think of this great little blog, FYNCT, every time I say the word terrarium. So in honor of FYNCT's regular Terrarium Tuesday posts, I thought I would coincide my post on this year's mother's day terrarium projects. I made these little gems for my mother, mother and sister-in-laws to be.

Ever wonder what the embroidered portraits would look like in color, and painted? Well, I had the great fortune of being asked to create this lovely photo prop for a wedding this past weekend, and I'm so happy that the couple thought of me, otherwise I probably would have never

1. Translated the embroidered portrait into it's painted counterpart
2. Created a portrait in this style, this large. It's 6 foot by 4 foot!
3. Cut holes into something I've made

If I can manage to get some pictures of the prop in use, I will surely follow up with those!

I'm way behind giving thanks to the awesome blogs that have featured my work over the past few months, and it's been hard to stay on top of the traffic sources to make sure that I catch all of those who have shared my work, but I want to thank you all!

blue ridge mountains

My best friend and maid of honor Jessica, my fiance Kevin, and our beautiful german shepherd Mina, spent this weekend up in the mountains relaxing, playing scrabble, relaxing, and walking.

I love the woods, I love being in nature, I love all of the different textures and colors you can find if you just slow down and look around.

I LOVE THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS

love

2011 was the year that I decided I was going to make all of my gifts. It started with the wedding portraits, for which Cortney & Chris were the inspiration. We had attended their wedding in October of 2010, and when May came around and we still hadn't gotten them a wedding gift (or Caitlin & Mathew and Andrea & Stephen), we set out on a mission to get it done. We knew it had to be something unique and AWESOME, and so, the embroidered wedding portrait was born. Once theirs was completed, we knew that the portraits would have to be the gift for every wedding we attended. I couldn't have anticipated how popular they'd be, but I've got about seven commissions lined up, four wedding gifts, and a special portrait for Melanie Blodgett of You Are My Fave as a THANK YOU for being the first to feature my work. I'm going to take this opportunity to thank all of you who are waiting so patiently for me to get to it: THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE! I'm excited to finally get back to them and get them done now that the holiday season is over.

So for my mother's birthday in December, I decided to do something special to show her how much I love her. And what better way than with hand embroidered letters, inspired by doilies, that spell out love, right?

chalkboard fun: skeleton key!

i suppose there must be a special key to get through the wonderland door, and this one looks like it might be just right.

my shading on the pelvic bone doesn't really translate the way i'd like, but i remind myself that this is merely a sketch for a more permanent piece in the future. the thing i really love about this wall is getting to play with scale, making what are generally small objects very large.

sneak peek

i'm very excited to share this one, but it looks like i won't have natural sunlight for a few days to photograph, so here is a sneak peek.

Featured!!! round up!

well, i must say that i am very excited about all of the interest that i'm getting in the embroidered wedding portraits. things have been very busy and i'm a little behind but i'd like to send a gracious thank you to the following blogs for featuring my work.

chalkboard fun: wonderland!

alright, let's be honest and say that every sunday is a little ambitious when your mind works like mine. it would have worked out beautifully if i didn't over think what each new drawing would be. random subjects are a necessary exercise and one that i will most certainly continue, but i may have gotten a little side tracked as ideas snowballed into a project larger than i could have anticipated this wall would bring.

i like a certain aesthetic; i'm very fond of baroque frames and surfaces rich with history. i love tromp l'oeil in moderation and interesting typography. i'm pretty sure that the art nuveau period is my favorite, and i'm interested in work that provokes thought and the question "how?". i've decided to use this wall to illustrate "alice's adventures in wonderland" and "through the looking glass" using these aesthetics. i think it's going to be very interesting.
